Description
Marigolds are vibrant and bold, making them a stunning addition to any garden. They are also valuable companion plants, particularly for tomatoes, potatoes, and roses. Known for inhibiting nematodes—soil-dwelling pests—they are essential for planting after tomatoes to refresh and prepare the soil for future crops. Marigolds also make a great companion to basil and tomatoes in summer.
They thrive in full sun and well-drained soil but can grow in poorer soil as well. Plant seedlings from early summer, avoiding frost and cold soil. For best results, sow seeds in seed-raising mix in spring or early summer. The fine, light seeds should be barely covered and typically germinate within two weeks. Prick out seedlings when they are large enough to handle, and remove dead blooms to encourage continuous flowering.
