Description
The wick of these candles are handcrafted from a 16th century technique by wrapping dried rush weed, around wooden or bamboo skewer covered with cylindrically rolled washi paper and silk fibre.
The resulting wick has a hollow center that allows air to pass up from the lower part of the candle while also increasing its capacity to absorb melted wax, resulting in more efficient combustion and a large, distinctive flame that flickers beautifully.
Box includes 5 Sumac candles- Pair these with the Takazawa Stoneware Candle Holder for the ultimate gift.

Candlelight in Harmony with Nature.
Founded in 1892, Takazawa candle is one of Japan’s oldest candle makers, preserving a craft tradition that dates back to the 16th century. Each candle is made by hand using plant-based waxes from sumac fruit, rice bran, and rapeseed flower oil—materials long cherished for their clean, bright flame.
The wick, made from dried rush and washi paper, burns with a signature wide glow—designed in an era before electricity to fill rooms with warmth and light. Takazawa’s candles honour the relationship between people and nature, offering not just illumination, but a quiet link to centuries of thoughtful making.
