Description
The Medium Black Maire Ring Cone is a handcrafted wooden ring holder, made in Aotearoa New Zealand from recycled native black maire.
Part of Kate Pilot’s Pūpuri Collection, the Ring Cone began with the simple nightly ritual of placing a wedding ring on a small timber cone beside the bed. Shaped after a jeweller’s ring sizing tool, it creates a considered place to keep wedding rings and everyday jewellery when they are not being worn.
Each cone is hand-turned from reclaimed black maire, a timber whose natural colour can range from warm honey with dark streaks to almost entirely black, depending on where it was cut from the tree. It is weighted with steel for stability and finished with an engraved brass base bearing its individual edition number. Produced as a limited edition of just nine pieces per size, the form corresponds with the opening in the Pūpuri Dish lid, allowing the pieces to be stacked and arranged together.
Made from reclaimed native timber, each piece carries its own individual grain, tone and markings, so no two are the same.

Kate Pilot is a New Zealand designer whose practice spans film, interiors, furniture and objects. With a background in film, Kate spent twelve years working in props and set dressing, collaborating with artists, makers and craftspeople. She later moved into interior design, creating spaces informed by the people who inhabit them. Her longstanding interest in making and collecting has naturally extended her practice into furniture and object design, exploring the relationship between materials, form and everyday use. Her first collection, Pupuri, brings this approach to a series of sculptural wooden objects designed to hold and keep small personal treasures.
