Description
A one-of-a-kind vintage Kantha quilt in worn brown and beige with multicolour stripes and two small blue square patches, made in India from layers of reclaimed cotton textiles and stitched entirely by hand.
Lightweight and beautifully tactile, Kantha quilts can be used as a bedcover, folded over a sofa or chair, or hung as a textile work. Variations in colour, fading, patches, repairs, loose threads and irregularities in the stitching are part of its individual character and evidence of its age and hand-worked construction.
Kantha is a centuries-old textile tradition originating in Bengal, in which worn and collected cloth is given new life by layering pieces together and working rows of small running stitches across the surface. The repeated hand stitching binds the layers while creating the distinctive rippled texture and softness characteristic of these quilts.
