Description

Tenugui towels have been used in Japanese homes since the 9th century and are now a staple of daily life. Due to the towels excellent absorbency, durability, and quick-drying properties, a Tenugui can be used as a hand towel, tea towel, washcloth, bandana, gift wrap, table runner, or even wall art.

The striped pattern with bonito is often used as a traditional pattern in Japan since it is considered an auspicious fish, symbolizing victories. The gradient represents the color of the bonito which fades from the back to the belly. The Chu-sen hand dyeing technique is utilized to obtain this gradation effect.

Kamawanu specialises in the traditional hand-dying technique of Chusen to create unique, contemporary designs for the next generation. Skilled artisans can take up to a month creating the design handcarving tanned paper. The pattern is then starched to leave areas that absorb the dye in layers before washing, air drying and hand cutting the towels to size.

Traditional Tenugui, Hand-Dyed in Tokyo.

Kamawanu is celebrated for its exquisite tenugui—traditional Japanese cloths that are hand-dyed in Tokyo using age-old techniques passed down for generations. Based in Daikanyama, this family-run workshop has spent over a century refining the chusen dyeing process, a resist-dye method that produces intricate, reversible patterns with natural inks.

More than just textiles, Kamawanu’s tenugui embody everyday beauty and thoughtful craftsmanship. Versatile in their use—as towels, gift wrap, table settings, or scarves—each piece invites creativity while preserving one of Japan’s most enduring textile traditions.
