For a community of like-minded gardeners exploring the natural world at a gentler pace, Sage Journal is an independent New Zealand gardening publication and a journal for the garden curious. Bringing together botanical storytelling, garden design, plants and practical gardening knowledge, Sage explores gardens across Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia and beyond.
Founded by Hawke’s Bay writer, gardener and editor Emma Sage, Sage grew from a passion for green spaces and a curiosity about the garden as an extension of the home. Exploring the intersection of gardens, people and plants, Sage looks to gardens as places to dwell, gather, play and create, celebrating both the beauty of botany and the creativity found in growing.
Through thoughtful storytelling, practical advice, evocative photography and creative inspiration, Sage moves between gardens and landscapes, growing guides, recipes and art, bringing together stories of people, plants and place.

Sage began from Emma’s search for local garden inspiration that felt both relatable and aspirational. Stories of real gardens, knowledgeable gardeners and the questions, successes and failures that come with growing.

At the heart of Sage is knowledge shared and preserved, particularly the kind passed between generations through conversations in the garden. A place for experienced gardeners and the garden curious alike.

People, plants and place form the three central threads of Sage. Its stories move through gardens and landscape design, artists and makers, growing and making, with the belief that working with nature is a creative practice in itself.
